Summary of Pope’s visit to Croatia

After his journey to Croatia on June 4-5, 2011, Benedict XVI weighed up the experience during the General Audience on June 8. Addressing some 8,000 faithful gathered on St. Peter’s Square, the pope recalled “the urgency of the challenge that today faces all the people of this continent”. He explained that he was speaking of the challenge “not to be afraid of God, of the God of Jesus Christ, who is Love and Truth and who takes nothing from freedom but restores it”. The pope also confided that, during his 19^th papal trip abroad, it had seemed clear to everyone that the deepest vocation of Europe was “to safeguard and to renew a humanism which has Christian roots and can be described as ‘catholic’, that is, universal and integral”. Over the course of his travels in Croatia, Benedict XVI had declared that without religion, without morality and without conscience, Europe was doomed to decline.

This short stay was also an opportunity to encourage married couples in their mission. “In our day,” the Supreme Pontiff noted, “while unfortunately the increase in separation and divorce can be seen, the fidelity of spouses has become in itself an important witness to Christ’s love that makes it possible to experience Marriage for what it is.” And he repeated that marriage is “the union of a man and a woman who, with Christ’s grace, love each other and help each other throughout their lives, in joy and in suffering, in health and in sickness.”

While celebrating Mass on the Hippodrome in Zagreb on June 5, the pope told Catholic families to be especially on guard against “transient experiences” or extra-marital unions. The Vigil that Benedict XVI celebrated with thousands of young people on the evening of June 4 in the heart of Zagreb “fitted very well into this context of great attention to the family,” he also pointed out on June 8.
