Eighty-five thousand Australians signed a petition asking the Australian Labor Party (ALP) not to legalize homosexual marriage, the news agency KNA reported on November 29, 2011. “The high number of signatures is proof that many Australians consider marriage to be exclusively the union between one man and one woman,” the director of Australian Christian Lobby (ACL), Jim Wallace, joyfully noted in Sydney. The ACL launched this online petition drive five weeks ago in collaboration with the Australian Family Association (AFA), a group that defends the family and family values.
The Australian Labor Party, currently in power, is divided on the question of homosexual marriage. The Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, is opposed to it, whereas her party, which held a conference in Sydney in early December, decided to add “gay marriage” to its reform program. A draft bill will be presented to Parliament in 2012. According to a recent poll, 70% of Australians and 53% of the Christians in the country say that they are open to marriage between persons of the same sex.
