PayerneThe municipality of Payerne, in the canton of Vaud, decided not to grant permits to build a future “De La Broye Islamic Cultural Center”, the daily newspaper La Liberté reported on November 30, 2011, because of the “risk of auditory nuisances”.  In explaining its decision, the municipality cites the noise, but also the lack of parking places and the unsuitability of a place of prayer in a residential area.  “Several examples in the region of Lausanne show that lack of access to a mosque can cause problems later,” the head of the project, Christelle Luisier Brodard, argued in a column in La Liberté.  While emphasizing that the decision by the executive branch of government in Payerne not to grant a building permit was made “on the basis of legal arguments”, she speculated that a project for building a mosque in an industrial zone “would clearly be more appropriate.  The municipality would have a completely different way of interpreting it.”  (Sources : Apic/La Liberté – DICI no.246 dated December 9, 2011)
